Below is a summary of the events as they happen on screen of Styx: Master of Shadows, if you just wish to follow the story along without having to play the game yourself. There is also a Video Walkthrough linked at the bottom.

Reminiscences

  • Area 1 - Styx is in prison and interrogated by Governor Barimen and his son Aaron. He starts to recount his actions in the tower of Akenash. Cut to Styx as controlled by the player. He awakens from his unconsciousness and starts to move. First goal: get back his dagger. He finds some rough maps of the area but needs something better, as well as a secure place from which to operate from. A bad headache plagues him. He hopes to find Amber in the next area, the Distillery.
  • Area 2 - Styx finds a vial of Amber. It soothes his headache. He can now make use of his ability to vomit smaller clones of himself. He continues to make his way out of the area towards a safe hiding space.
  • Area 3 - He runs into a dead end but is aided by Ozkan. His memory tells him he can trust this man. Despite not ACTUALLY remembering a thing, Styx pretends. He also gratefully accepts small maps leading to some valuable objects known to be around Akenash, that Styx apparently wished to secure for himself. Ozkan sends him towards a hideout in the sewers. Styx picks up the sewer pry bar and one of the aforementioned precious objects before making his way to the hideout..

Akenash's Atrium

  • Area 1 - Inside the hideout Ozkan reminds Styx that he's a dealer of stolen goods and that it didn't take long for them to work together. Styx's two goals now are: Secure a way out of Akenash and find a detailed map of the tower. Before Styx leaves, Ozkan asks if Styx could do two things for him: get rid of a worker called Godbert and get a certain book from within the library. Styx agrees and in this area, crosses an airship docking area to reach the Embassy. Godbert looses his life on the way.
  • Area 2 - Having reached the Embassy, Styx finds the flight plans and makes amends as it suits him best. He then keeps going until he reaches the Library, in which he hopes to find the maps of Akenash.
  • Area 3 - Inside the Library a contact of Ozkan, named Ector, helps Styx into the closed-off section where he presumes the maps to be. He warns Styx about Querberus's somehwat lunatic style to record information. On the way, Styx grabs that book Ozkan wanted.The maps are at the end of the area, recorded in Amber on the walls of the building itself. Memorising the maps, Styx takes a short cut back home.
  • Area 4 - The Incinerator leads back to his sewers hideout. Here, in a small, secret office, Styx secures another one of the Akenash relics.

Master Key

  • Area 1 - Styx's next goal is to grab the key that will open the path to the Heart of the Tree. It is somewhere inside Barimen's apartment. Ozkan has another favour to ask again: steal anything of value from Barimen's possessions and deliver the corpse of deserter. Styx agrees. To get to Barimen's apartment, Ozkan suggest Styx hide in a chest and be delivered there with other goods. Styx leaves via a section of the sewers to reach the docks.
  • Area 2 - Styx moves through the docks, picks up an Akenash relic and manages to hide inside a chest meant for delivery to Barimen's apartment.
  • Area 3 - As promised, Styx was delivered over night to Barimen's apartments. He overhears staff mention a secret office behind a bookshelf in Barimen's bedroom. So Styx makes his way to the bedroom, finds that secret office and grabs the key. He also finds out that Barimen has a lead to one of Ozkans's hideouts and that Barimen can listen in to various areas of the Akenash tower with a spy system installed in his secret office. Bad news for Ozkan. Styx continues through the apartment, steals the ashes of Barimen's departed wife for Ozkan and returns to the sewers.
  • Area 4 - In this section of the sewers Styx comes across Ozkan's goone-gone-straight, kills him and delivers his corpse to Ozkan.

Deliverance

  • Area 1 - Back to Styx in prison. Governor Barimen doesn't believe his story and leaves to verify it. Aaron remains behind but then orders the bridge to the Heart of the Tree to be destroyed, ruining Styx's plan. It makes it a bit more complex but Styx is determined to continue. We cut to the player controlled Styx in his hideout, effectively ready to grab the Heart. But before that, he has one more thing to do according to his own memory. He needs to enter the prison and free a "friend" of his. One that would know how to deal with an elf. Ozkan is not sure why Styx would want to do that, but if he is going there anyway, he could bring back a bulb-condenser. Styx leaves the hideout the way he entered it for the first time and makes his way through this familiar area to the large elevator leading down to the prison.
  • Area 2 - The low security area of the prison introduces Styx to members of the Inquisition, who can use magic on their foes. Avoiding those as best as he can, Styx needs to open a large gate leading to the lower sections of the prison and the laboratories. On the way, he nicks a precious "Kitten" from one of the guards, traded in by an inmate for a little bit of better treatment down here.
  • Area 3 - The laboratories sit between the low and high security sections of the prison. The humans conduct many Amber related experiments there and don't shy away from human test subjects. It is here that Styx finds the bulb-condenser for Ozkan. Styx also comes across enslaved orcs that will kill him in an instant of stepped to close.
  • Area 4 - Finally, the high security section. More guard orcs, humans in heavy armour and roabies to make his progression hard. When he finally reaches Cell No 5, Styx comes to see his "friend" face to face. It is himself. Turns out, Styx as controlled by the player, was a mere clone of this Styx sitting in prison, doing just as told, without his own agency and will. And now that he as accomplished all tasks, he will be destroyed. Styx is being attacked by his creator and left for dead in Cell No 5.

The Creator

  • Area 1 - Styx lives but is very weak. Injured he starts following his creator, confused and angry. Once again, his first action is to recover his dagger. All orcs a dead and the humans are on their feet. Many lesser clones where created to distract them and allow Styx, the real one, to travel through the complex unhindered.
  • Area 2 - In the laboratories, Styx catches up with his creator. From a hiding place he witnesses him interrogating Aaron. He pours raw Amber over Aaron's face, disfiguring him in the process but being able to read Aaron's thoughts. He wishes to know the location of Querberus, the architect of the Tower of Akenash, who MUST know other ways to reach the Heart of the Tree without the bridge. From what he saw, Querberus is kept in the sewers, working on distilling Amber fit for human consumption. Styx decides to find Querberus before his creator does to spite him. He keeps moving through the laboratories. At the end, he finds another duplicate that was conscious enough of his own existence. It dies.
  • Area 3 - Styx realises that his creator can probably read his own thoughts as well and curses at him. At the end of the low security section Styx runs yet again into a dying duplicate. Styx vows to be his own master from now on. When he reaches the elevator, his creator leaves the area alone. Styx is forced to move down the elevator shaft and back to his hideout. Hidden in the shaft is another Akenash relic.

The Architect

  • Area 1 - Styx returns to the hideout, surprising Ozkan. The dealer didn't expect Styx to return and now begs for his life. Styx does not listen as Ozkan let him be a puppet willingly for too long. He kills him (optional player action). Styx's next goal is to get Querberus before his creator does. He knows the area in the sewers and starts with his search there. Upon leaving his little secret room, Styx must deal with the humans suddenly raiding this area before proceeding.
  • Area 2 - The humans in this area are on edge, too. Styx asks one of them about Querberus's location and follows his lead... into a trap. He corrects his path. Some of the humans hint towards some precious items inside a workshop nearby. Styx makes a small detour but then proceeds to a different area of the sewers.
  • Area 3 - Checking out what some of the guards in this section have to say, Styx overhears that Querberus has been locked up here since the tower's completion and that he does nothing but conduct his own little experiment again and again every single day. Styx stumbles into the guard supplying Querberus with food and water and follows him to his secret location. Styx makes contact and finds out Querberus's memory isn't the best anymore. He pretends this was all planned and asks the old man to follow him to his own hideout. Before leaving the area, Styx follows up on some smugglers talking about a small stash of loot hidden nearby and retrieves that.
  • Area 4 - Styx drops Querberus off at his hideout in the sewers. He now suddenly remembers the day he turned 30 as on orc, how he received a dagger as present from his father and how he left to study the Amber. He rejects those memories as his own and converses with his creator telepathically. The original Styx wants him to bring Querberus to his secret private laboratory. In return he offers him memories and an identity. Styx makes his way to the the laboratory, meeting the Doomed on his way for the first time. Evading their attacks, Styx collects another of the Akenash relics. He reaches the laboratory shortly after. His creator is disappointed Styx didn't bring Querberus and both laughs at and yearns they idea, of being killed by his clone. Styx attempts to strike his creator down, but the latter evades every time, lamenting how the Amber in his veins would not allow him to die. Tired of it, he strikes back at Styx and is about to finish him off, when an elf approaches. His presence affects the original Styx too much and he flees.

Conflagration

  • Area 1 - The elf who dragged Styx back to his sewer hideout was the elf Ambassador himself. Being connected by the Amber, the elves know about Styx and the situation. The ambassador fears that the original Styx will get his way with the Heart and that only Styx, as controlled by the player, can save them. Without the Heart the Tree will die and with the political situation between elves and humans right now, an escalation of the tension will surely follow, with heavy losses on both sides. He wants Styx to stabilize the political situation, then get rid of his creators mark and become independent, and finally proceed to kill his creator before he reaches the Heart. Styx agrees. He uses the route via the Incinerator to reach the library.
  • Area 2 - In the library, Styx gets hold of a forged letter by the elf Ambassador calling for an attack that very night. He also collects further documents regarding the number of prisoner deaths and Amber deliveries under Aaron's authority. Equipped with all evidence, he makes his way through the library to the Embassy, where the elf Ambassador has arranged a meeting with Governor Barimen.
  • Area 3 - Styx proceeds straight away to the Embassy's meeting room and delivers the papers to the elf. He is being warned by the elf, that his peers do not see upon Styx the same way and will attack him. Staying out of sight, Styx witnesses the meeting between Barimen and the elf. Barimen wishes to ask about all the goblin clones in the prisons but the elf cuts him short to talk about Aaron and Styx... when the original Styx appears out of nowhere and assassinates the governor. He disappears just as quickly and leaves it up to Styx to help the elf Ambassador out of the area. He drops a large chandelier to divert attention. The Ambassador can leave by airship.
  • Area 4 - Together they stop by the docks outside the Embassy. Styx is going to get Querberus to the elf so that both may leave the tower to safety. He makes his way across the area to find Querberus in a locked room mortally wounded by the original Styx. In his dying breath, Querberus reveals that the spy system's main duct leads to the Heart of the Tree. Since Styx is still connected to his creator, the latter now knows how to complete his goal and thanks Styx for the work he's done. Angry, Styx returns to his sewer hideout.

Renaissance

  • Area 1 - After Barimen's death, Aaron has taken over the control of the tower and locked the elves up. The elf Ambassador asks Styx for one more favour, which is on the way to his goal of becoming an independent Amber creature: free his kin. Styx agrees but he cannot wait to catch up with his creator and put an end to all this. Once more, Styx travels through the city area to reach the path towards the Distillery. He witnesses Aaron talking to the crowd, announcing his next actions. Having locked up the elves and intruding a curfew, he will now leave to legitimize his position as new governor of Akenash with the Emperor. Styx follows him and sees how Aaron drops off the key to the elves' area with his trusted second hand man.
  • Area 2 - After entering the Distillery quietly, Styx steals the key from than henchman and proceeds to free the elves. They are not happy to see him, however, and lock him up where they have been before. The elves consider Styx to be the one to destroy everything and don't trust the judgement of their Ambassador due to his long contact to the humans. Nonetheless, Styx can proceed to an empty Amber cocoon and free himself from his mark and be reborn. Finally not hearing any voices anymore, he makes his way towards Barimen's apartment. The elves have cleared the path from humans and orcs, but of course, will now attack in their place. The elves are sensitive to Amber and can smell it within Styx, so extra care is due. Elves can also summon the Doomed.
  • Area 3 - Styx emerges at the bottom of Barimen's apartments, by the staff and delivery entrance. He works his way through the staff housing and up towards Barimen's bedroom. He needs to be careful inside the secret office, as some of the Doomed have found their way there. Once defeated however, Styx takes one last breath and then rolls through the main duct of the spy system straight to the Heart of the Tree.
  • Area 4 / Boss Fight - Styx finds his creator just as he is trying to free the Heart from it's place in the Tree. The original Styx isn't too happy about Styx's arrival and sends 3 of his clones to deal with him. Styx fends them off and taunts his creator once more. Again, 3 invisible clones try to get rid of Styx but fail. Finally, the Heart is free but the Doomed distract the original Styx long enough to allow Styx to grab the Heart first.

The original Styx relates his story, the shame he felt for not being on orc anymore and the nightmares he went through to get here and undo the damage. He offers Styx freedom in exchange for the Heart. But Styx has none of it. He does all he can to increase the suffering of his creator, so he destroys the Heart in his clenched fist. Furious the original Styx is about to lynch his clone but again, Styx keeps the upper hand and simply takes his own life by throwing himself deep down into the Amber lake by the Tree's roots. From there, rakash emerge and climb up the stem and tear the original Styx apart. All as they Tower of Akenash crumbles and falls from the sky with the dead World Tree inside.

Styx recounts his birth. Waking up in a dried up lake bed, without memory, the many 'me's that where there, too, and his final realization, that he is the one and only Styx in this world.
